James — Murray

I grew up in a single-family home in the Salt Lake Valley. Living in a one-income family, my brother and I did not have the opportunity to attend the school we needed. I barely finished high school. I remember retaking final tests the day of graduation. Attending a school that did not meet my needs made my adult life harder than it needed to be.

I later went into the military, and I was encouraged to attend college. I had to start again at elementary algebra and work my way back up to where I should have been in high school. Through a lot of challenging work, I completed my Bachelor of Science and military career after 23 years.

Today I find myself in the same situation with my son. I did not know how I could afford the school he needed to be successful. I was grateful to find out our son was awarded the Utah Fits All Scholarship earlier this year. The news opened the door to so many options that would have never been available before. He is actually attending the type of school that I once needed. I look forward to the education he will receive and the man he will become. Again, I am thankful for this scholarship and the opportunity it provides to change the cycle from my generation to his.
